Interesting Moore History.
ELDER FRANCIS MOORE of Maldon and Cambridge
was born in 1586 - christened 2 September 1592, in Maldon, Essex, England, to Enoch Moore (1561-1619) and Catherine Johnson (1565-before 1593.) He married (1) Unknown who died; (2) *Catherine Monford, about 1618 in England, (3) Elizabeth Periman (1595-1655), 6 December 1653, Massachusetts. He was chief heir and executor for his brother Samuel, then he and his wife Catherine moved from England to Newbury, Massachusetts. He was granted land there in 1638. He was sworn a freeman 22 May 1639. Elder Francis Moore (1586-1671) Arrived in 1639 (ship unknown) to Cambridge, Massachusetts from Maldon, Essex, England, at the age of 46. His first wife had died young, and he had remarried in England by the time he was 38. He brought his 2nd wife, Catherine Montfort, and several children with him to America, including Hannah Anne Moore. Francis took the oath of freeman on 22 May 1639, and was a large land holder in Cambridge (the area that later became Arlington, Mass). The title of “elder” was an elected “shepard” of the Congregational Church, who assisted the minister, also elected. In 1644, the Colony of Massachusetts ceded to Cambridge a large tract of land on the Shawshin and Concord Rivers, then known as Shawshin, soon after to be known as Billerica. The Church at Cambridge received as its portion several hundred acres which it distributed in 1653 as house lots among the older residents of the town, of which one was "Elder" Francis Moore. After his daughter Hannah married James Kidder, it is believed that her husband settled for a time on his father-in-law's 50 acres, having preceded his young family for the purpose of establishing a new home. After Francis’ wife, Catherine died in 1648, he married a third time the widow Mrs. Elizabeth Periman. His sons had moved to Newbury, Mass. and New Jersey, and Francis died in Newbury in 1671 at the age of 85, and was buried in the Old Burying Ground in Cambridge. He was one of the wealthiest and most respected citizens of Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA. in his time. Elder Francis Moore died 20 August 1671, Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts, age 78. CATHERINE MONFORD was born October 1586, in Norwich, Norfolk, England to John and Frances Monford. She married Elder Francis Moore, in about 1618, England. Catherine Monford died 28 December 1648, in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts, age 62. Children of Francis Moore and Catherine Monford: 1.Francis Moore, b. 1620, England. 2.Samuel Moore, b. 1626, probably England. 3.Anna Moore, b. 1630, probably England; md. Mr. Underwood. 4.Matthew Moore, b. 1638, Newbury, Massachusetts. 5.Samuel Moore, b. 1639, England. 6.Sarah Moore, b. 3 Apr 1643, Cambridge, Massachusetts. 7.John Moore, 20 March 1645, Cambridge, Massachusetts. 8.Thomas Moore, b. 1645, Cambridge, Massachusetts
